Phase 1: Laying the Foundation for 'La Fuerza de Nuestra Lengua'

Every ambitious project begins with a solid foundation and Phase 1 of La Fuerza de Nuestra Lengua: Raíces, Fortaleza y Rostros de Habla Hispana is all about laying the groundwork to bring this vision to life. For those of you who are new to this journey, this project seeks to capture the stories of resilience, cultural identity, and pride (orgullo) within the Hispanic community, with a focus on sharing the beauty and strength of our language and heritage through portraits and personal narratives.

So, what does Phase 1 involve?

1. Forming a Legal Entity

First, I needed to ensure the project was legally protected and structured properly. This meant establishing the legal framework for La Fuerza de Nuestra Lengua, so that all aspects of the project, from fundraising to intellectual property, would be handled responsibly and securely. This step is vital to ensure that both the participants and their stories are respected, protected, and shared in the most ethical way possible. (Pending)

2. Intellectual Property Protection

Since this project will include deeply personal stories and culturally significant imagery, I’m taking steps to protect the intellectual property (IP) of each portrait and narrative. This means drafting and securing the proper releases and agreements with participants to ensure their stories are shared with integrity while protecting their ownership of the narrative. (Completed)

3. Contracts and Agreements

Speaking of releases and agreements, this step is central to Phase 1. Every participant will have the opportunity to sign a contract outlining how their images and stories will be used in the book, exhibit, and other potential publications. This ensures transparency and builds trust, giving each participant the comfort of knowing their voice will be honored. (Completed)

4. Scholarship Fund Management

This project is about more than just sharing stories—it’s about giving back. A portion of the funds raised through the sale of the photobook will go directly into scholarships for Latine students pursuing higher education. I’ve been working behind the scenes to determine how these funds will be managed, ensuring they’ll be distributed to help students in need, particularly for essentials like computers, books, and childcare. (On Hold until a little later...but tied to #1)

5. Data Privacy and Compliance

Handling personal stories and photographs means that data privacy is of the utmost importance. I’ve developed protocols for how we collect, store, and share the information entrusted to this project, all while complying with current data privacy laws. This step not only protects the participants but also builds the credibility and ethical standing of the project. (In Process)

What’s Next?

Phase 1 may sound like all the "boring" technical stuff, but it’s absolutely essential for the integrity and longevity of La Fuerza de Nuestra Lengua. I’m committed to creating a safe and transparent space where participants feel confident sharing their stories, knowing they are part of something meaningful and lasting.

Now that Phase 1 is nearly complete, we’re moving forward with the interviews and portrait sessions—my favorite part! Stay tuned as we continue this journey, one story and one face at a time.

Thank you for your continued support, and I can't wait to share more updates soon!
